Since October 2015 I have been living in Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT). This area consists of eighty towers constructed along the edge of three artificial lakes. All residential towers are organized in 26 clusters of three towers named from A to Z. The project is estimated to have a residential population of around 60.000 people and a working population of another 120.000.
The workers, tourists and residents from different backgrounds create a relaxing vibe in this area. JLT is a green area where you can go for a run across the lakes. It is close to Dubai Marina and from my house I can walk to the beach for a swim. These elements make me really happy for living here.
When I announced at my work at Reed Elsevier in Amsterdam that I would move to Dubai, colleagues introduced me to Annechien. Annechien moved from the Dutch city The Hague to Dubai two years ago and she writes about cosmopolitan Dubai on her own blog Sparklingstorytellers.com. I started to follow her and after some mail contact I arranged my first meeting in Dubai. Two months later Annechien (known in Dubai as ‘Anna’) and I had a “date” at Friends Avenue Café.
Being new to the area and in search for places with a European atmosphere, I was really surprised when I entered this cozy café in JLT. It was still warm outside when I met Annechien, but that’s so lovely about Friends Avenue Café you can either sit inside or outside.
Some of the meals served are organic. During my first visit I ordered the “Crunchy Superfood Salad” salad. This healthy salad has a lot of vegetables like kale, broccoli, red cabbage and parsley. Ask the staff to put the dressing on the side and you will come far for eating your 200 gram vegetables a day.
The staff is friendly and gives you a welcoming feeling. The background music is not too loud, what makes the café also a good place for having a seat and work behind your laptop. Sometimes they forgot to switch cd’s, so if you stay for a couple of hours and would like to hear a different sound, just inform the staff and they will change it.
In the last six months I visited Friends Avenue Café quite often. To do some work or to meet people. And I already introduced it to two of my other Dutch friends. As a regular visitor I downloaded the loyalty app SnappCard, so after six coffees or six meals I get one for free.
After the meeting with Annechien I felt happy and excited about my adventure in this new city where I would love to make my dreams come true. Nowadays I still see Annechien, so the name of this place reminds me also of the start of a new friendship in the city where I had just arrived.
